The mission of this site is to provide sickle cell patient and their families and health care providers with professional education, news, research updates and access to sickle cell resources worldwide. Our goals are:
  • to empower patients and families take control of their health and their lives, to break the sickle cycle.
  • to enable health care providers and organizations to provide world class, compassionate care, education and counseling to patients with sickle cell disease.
  • to increase awareness and knowledge about sickle cell disease across the globe.
  • to foster research to expand treatment options for sickle cell disease, and ultimately to provide a cure.

Indicators of an Emergency Situation

Patients and families should watch for the following conditions that need an urgent medical evaluation:
• Fever of 101° F or higher
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath
• Increasing tiredness
• Abdominal swelling
• Unusual headache
• Any sudden weakness or loss of feeling
• Pain that will not go away with home treatment
• Priapism (painful erection that will not go down)
• Sudden vision change
